Poison Control

Last night while getting dinner out of the oven, Hudson managed to grab a leaf off my house plant and stick it in his mouth.  Now I have been meaning to look up the name of this plant and read up on it since he became mobile.  Had I done this? Nope. Stupid me!

First step- remove leaf from Hudson's mouth.
Second step- call my dad to see if he knows what kind of plant it is
Third step- frantically look it up on the internet because my dad wasn't sure
Fourth step- after about 10minutes I concluded that I have a plant called Dumb Cane and that it is POISONOUS!!
Fifth step- freak out, call Poison Control,
Sixth step- Follow directions of the really helpful person at Poison Control-wash Hudson's mouth, look for signs of swelling, give him some ice cream, wait 1 hour

It turned out that Hud was fine.  He didn't actually swallow any of the plant but it has some pretty serious side effects if it is swallowed or stays in the mouth too long.  The plant is called a DUMB cane because it can cause you tongue to swell up to where you can't talk.  It can also cause burning so that's why poison control had me give him ice cream.  BTW, that was his first experience with ice cream and he even tried to lick his tray when it was all gone!

The person at Poison Control even called back after 1 hour to make sure he was OK.  It's definitely a good idea to keep their number close by.  My plant is now on the front porch and will soon be going in the trash.  There are very few house plants that are poisonous- but of course I happened to have one of them!

Hiccups

Yesterday Hudson had hiccups off an on several times.  Then last night I got hiccups.  Hudson thought it was so funny.  It took twice as long for him to drink his bottle because every time I would hiccup he would crack up laughing

Here is a card that you can print off that lists which fruits/veggies are high/low in pesticides.

I feel like I have become an expert at removing poop from clothes.  I'm not sure if Hudson has more or less "blow outs" than other babies but he has given me plenty of practice in removing the lovely stuff from both of our clothing.  "Blow out" is the term that Hudson's teacher at daycare uses.  I have come to really appreciate the term.  I think it sounds way better to have her tell me he had a blowout rather than to say he pooped on himself.

Last week I stopped by Ulta on my way home from work.  As I was standing at the check out with Hudson on my hip, I started feeling something wet.  Hudson was wearing navy sweat pants and I had on scrubs.  I pulled him ever so slightly away from my hip - just enough to tell that my scrubs wear wet - yuck! What to do?

I decided to go ahead and pay for the brush I was buying and just keep Hudson plastered against my hip (hoping no one would notice).  The good thing was that his antibiotics had the wonderful side affect of making his poop not smell!

So now I can add "expert in poop removal" to my resume.  Next task....become an expert in removing food stains from clothes.  I recently learned that banana left too long will stain    If anyone has any suggestions or favorite products for removing food stains I would love to hear about it!

Hudson came down with pneumonia on Monday.   He pretty much spent the whole day sleeping- with me holding him.  Monday night...more sleeping with me holding him.  I spent most of the night in the recliner or on the couch until Mike got up to relieve me at 5:30am.  Poor guy must have felt really bad because I can count on one hand the number of times he has fallen asleep with me holding him.

On Tuesday the antibiotics kicked in (yea!) and he actually played a little, gave me a few smiles, and took naps in his bed.   I love holding my baby but after 24hrs of holding(Mike helped when he was home) I really wanted to be able to take a shower and clean up around the house.  I was hopeful that he would sleep in his bed on Tuesday night.

Something that has been a huge help to us is having Hudson on a routine.  It really keeps us from have to guess as much about what he needs.  But, of course, being sick completely threw us out of anything that resembled "normal."

On Tuesday night, he went to sleep in his bed.  I was exhausted from the previous night.  Just before midnight I heard Hudson crying...not fussing....full out crying.  I got up and fed him.  The dr suggested I feed him if he woke up during the night to help prevent dehydration and in turn keep him out of the hospital.  After feeding I tried to lay him down.....more crying.  I rocked him, carried him around and sang to him but he just kept crying.  After an hour and afraid something was seriously wrong, I woke up Mike.  We decided (with our fuzzy, tired brains) that his stomach might be hurting.  We tried giving him a warm bath, more rocking, a diaper change, and even playing but he was still upset.

After another 45 minutes we were really worried and starting to wonder if we needed to go to the ER.  Then, it dawned on me that maybe he was still hungry.  I don't normally feed him at that time so maybe my milk supply was low.  I made him a bottle which he quickly stared sucking down.  With hope that we discovered the problem I sent Mike back to bed.  After the bottle, Hudson let out a big fart .  He was then all smiles.  I read him a book and then put him back in bed.  Immediately the thumb went in his mouth and he was off to dreamland.

Ahhh....all that and he was just hungry.  Why didn't I think of that first?
